WPA Champion of Champions - Singles

Michael Rocks (Khandallah) went one better than last year to claim the Champion of Champions - Singles title at Silverstream. In the final he beat Annick Le Guen (Kapiti).

Park Avenue were successful in their first defence of the Jacques Cochonnet against Wanganui East.

World Junior Championship

5 October 2009

Italy won the World Junior (Under 18) Championship in Monastir, Tunisa, beating France 13-6 in the final. Poland beat Monaco 13-8 to win the Nations Cup. The Shooting Competition was won by Sarayoot Kaewpudpong (Thailand).

Australia finished third equal in the Nations Cup.

Super Seniors

9 October 2009

If there is enough interest Kapiti Pétanque are organising an over 70 fun tournament. The tentative date is Wednesday 2nd December.

PNZ National Singles

11 October 2009

Thirty-two players took part in the National Singles at Bay View with local players to the fore in the Trophy section. Maurice Belz (Bay View) defeated Sharon Cannon (Bay View) 13-7 to win his first National title.

Andrew Joe (Windy Hills) won the Plate, Helene Hay (Masterton) the Bowl, and Ian Hay (Napier) the Bowl Consolation.

PNZ Forum

13 October 2009

The PNZ Board are holding an Open forum on Saturday 17 October from 2:00 pm at the Park Avenue Pétanque club, Treadwell Steet, Naenae. This forum is open to all WPA club members. The format is a Question and Answer session.

The forum allows members to ask questions, air concerns, make suggestions and provide feedback to the Board members.

A similar forum was held in Auckland in August.

Training Day

13 October 2009

Dirk Winnie will be running another Regional Training day on Saturday 17 October. The venue is the Park Avenue Pétanque club, Treadwell Steet, Naenae. The session will start at 10:00 am and conclude at 2:00 pm.

The cost is $5 per person and is open to any WPA member.

The Regional Training day on Saturday 17 October at Park Avenue Pétanque has been cancelled due to flooding and a forecast of further bad weather.

Note: The PNZ forum will still proceeed at 2:00pm.

Park Avenue retained the Jacques Cochonnet Trophy by beating Upper Hutt. The match was played at a neutral venue (Silverstream) due to the flooding of the Park Avenue terrain.

Khandallah Senior Doubles

18 October 2009

Eleven and a half of the fourteen teams decided to play despite the wet weather, with one non-Senior added to remove the Bye. National Senior Champions Doug and Helene Hay (Masterton) went through undefeated to claim the top spot.

WPA Regional Doubles Championship

25 October 2009

Thirty-two teams took part in the Regional Doubles held at the Kapiti Pétanque Club. In a new format, teams played in three rounds of barrage competition before finishing off with a knockout in eight dvisions.

In a repeat of last year's final, Nicolas Jegousse and Michael Rocks beat Andrew Joe and Dean Norman to retain their Doubles title.

A belated Congratulations to Nyra Bentley (Horowhenua), Peter Blake (Kapiti), Terry Dawson (Kapiti), Steve Frampton (Manawatu) and Jack Gazzard (Kaptiti) who all successfully passed their PNZ Level 1 Umpiring exams.

The Wellington team to play against the Canterbury and Southern regions in the Southern Tri Star match in Wellington next month is:

Seven clubs took part in the Champion of Champions - Doubles at Wanganui East. The club team of Morgan Choveaux and Annick Le Guen finished in first place on countback from Brian Bradburn/Claire Bradburn (Silverstream) and Doug Hay/Helene Hay (Masterton).
