Michael Rocks has advised that the vacancy for the Kapiti Open Doubles has now been filled.
Twenty-two teams took part in the Park Avenue New Year Doubles.
Yvonne Futcher and Michael Rocks won the Trophy final against Joan Miller and Claire Wilson 13-11.
Rusty and Dirk Winnie along with Jack and Linda Gazzard finished third equal.

It is most regrettable that Owen is not seeking re-election. As you will all appreciate he has done a great job and has been very helpful to me in particular.
I thought I should draw your attention to a small but important point regarding the position of Secretary - it is not necessary for the Secretary and President to be living in close proximity, they do however need to have email access. Please encourage your members to consider this position as we do not want to have to put someone else in the same position as we did to Owen last year when I asked him over the phone!

But what of the WPA? Do we need to change how we do things? With the Annual General Meeting coming up, Michael Rocks opens the debate.
Forty-two teams have entered the Kapiti Open Doubles which will be played this weekend at Paraparaumu. The field includes one team from the South Island, Keith Dixon and Christine Taylor, and one player from overseas, Alain Grailhe (Moissac, France).

Regional Umpire Gwen Hill has been writing an occassional Umpire's column in the Kapiti Pétanque club newsletter. Copies can be found in the Umpiring Resources.
The Anzac tournament over the years has rivalled the National Doubles championship in terms of the quality of the playing field. This year there is the added attraction of a new terrain surface.
The entry fee is $40 per team. Closing date for entry is 23 February 2009.

The FIPJP Congress meeting during the World Championships in Dakar, Senegal, last November ratified the adoption of several changes to the Official Rules of the Game of Pétanque.
Note: At this stage a date for their adoption by PNZ has not been announced.
In summary, the changes appear to be:

Forty-two teams took part in the ninth annual Kapiti Doubles held over Wellington anniversary weekend. Included in the field were two overseas entrants and teams from Auckland, Christchurch, Hawke's Bay and the greater Wellington region.
Myles Cowper and Pete Hamilton beat Maurice Belz and Ron Sandilands 13-12 in an absorbing final to win the Olive Shop Cup.
Information on the FIPJP website is rather limited, but from reports on the English Pétanque Association and Scottish Pétanque Association websites there will not be a Senior World Championship in 2009 following the Netherlands withdrawal as host.
Presumably the cost of staging a world championship has finally forced FIPJP to review the frequency and format of the three world championships. Since 1971 the Senior championship has been held annually, while the Junior (under 18) and Women's championships have been run in alternate years since 1987. Over the years the number of attendees has increased and with the host federation paying for the accommodation and meals during the tournament, the cost has meant that fewer federations are in a position to stage a championship.
The next Senior Championship will be held every even-numbered year starting in 2010 (possibly Taiwan or Turkey). The Women's championship may be brought forward a year (to 2009) and held in every odd-numbered year. Presumably, the Junior championship will continue in odd-numbered years.
In addition to the change in scheduling, it has also been suggested that the number of entries will be capped at 48, which will require each of the regional associations (Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe, Oceania) to stage a qualification championship in the year prior to each world championship. There is also a suggestion that the Senior championship will no longer be Open, but become a Men's championship.
It is unclear if the French proposal to introduce an Under 23 championship will proceed.
Note: The Junior World championship is scheduled for 2-4 October in Tunisia.
Michael Rocks will be running a series of four coaching sessions on Wednesday evenings during February for experienced players who wish to improve their skills. The sessions are limited to 12 players. First preference will be given to those players who did not attend the November sessions.
Note: These sessions are not aimed at new players.

A Senior (Over 60) inter-region competition along the lines of the Southern Triangular has been proposed for the weekend of 18 & 19 April, with the inaugural event to be held in Christchurch. Each Representative team comprises six players.
