3 September 2008: Sport Wellington Workshops

Sport Wellington is running two workshops on Club Promotion & Push Play. The first is in Lower Hutt on 10 September and the second in Wellington on 22 September.

The motion to replace the Constitution was passed. There were a significant number of ammendements made. The updated document will appear on the PNZ website after proof-reading.

14 September 2008: Hawke's Bay Classic Doubles

Claire Bradburn (Silverstream) and Monica Smiler (Park Avenue) defeated David and Joanne Lippard (Herne Bay) 13-2 in the Trophy final.

15 September 2008: PNZ National Singles

17 September 2008: Pétanque on Internet TV

For anyone with a fast internet connection there is now an option to subscribe to a French site that hosts High Definition video of major Petanque events. The cost is 9.90 € per month, or 99 € per year. For the first 1,000 subscribers the first year rate is only 89 €. Note: the commentary is in French

19 September 2008: National Club Championships

In the Winter 2008 edition of Pétanque New Zealand issued this week there is an announcement on a proposed National Club Championships in 2009.

20 September 2008: PNZ Representation process - Skills Evaluation

Thirteen of the fifteen Wellington players vying for national representation honours were put through their paces at a Skills Evaluation day held at the Horowhenua Pétanque club under the watchful eyes of PNZ Regional Coaches Graeme Morris and Bryan Wells.

Results from each of the regional skills evaluations will be collated by National TDR, Murray Porter, and the results will be published on the PNZ website.

20 September 2008: Horowhenua Spring Doubles

Horowhenua Petanque Club saw competitors from Wanganui down to Windy Hills at its Spring Doubles tournament. But the big winners on the day all came from near neighbour, Otaki, which scooped the major prizes.

Otaki's Club Captain, Gary Brunton with his partner, Mike Towart won the premier Trophy event, 13-7, with club mates Bob and Shirley Wilde in the runners-up position.

The Plate event was won by Louise Sligo and Tony Simpson from Wanganui East with a four point margin at 13-9. The runners-up were Shirley Peard and Stuart Middleton from the host club, Horowhenua.

At the third level of competition, the Bowl, Brian and Barbara Frampton from Otaki beat Jean Baine and Leslie Johnstone from Park Avenue Club, 13-6.

21 September 2008: WPA Winter Doubles

Pete Hamilton (Wanganui East) and Dirk Winnie (Khandallah) were the overall winners of the 2008 Winter Doubles. They were undefeated throughout the three round series. Full results to follow.

22 September 2008: National Director of Umpiring

PNZ is pleased to announce the reappointment of Andy Gilbert as National Director of Umpiring, and the appointment of Christine Taylor of Christchurch as Assistant Director.

23 September 2008: FIPJP Women's World Championships

Thirty-nine teams from thirty-seven countries are taking part in the XI Women's World Championship in Samsun, Turkey. Local representative Barbara Johnston and team coach Murray Johnston fly out from Wellington on Saturday 27 September.

23 September 2008: WPA Regional Singles

Twenty-eight entries have been received for the Regional Singles to be played at the Park Avenue Pétanque club on 27/28 September. Previous figures have been 2007 - 48, 2006 - 42, 2005 - 44.

28 September 2008: WPA Regional Singles

Twenty-five players took part in the Regional Singles and when the dust had settled, the 2007 finalists met again to decide the title. In the yellow corner, defending champion Dirk Winnie was undefeated in his march to the final, whereas top seed Michael Rocks, in the blue corner, had tripped up four times in his stagger to the final game.

However, the beauty of a final is that it allows the underdog to (occassionally) have its day, and so at the fourth attempt, Michael Rocks defeated Dirk Winnie for the first time in a competitive match.

In the Plate final, Monica Smiler beat Tony Chin. In the Bowl final, Richard Lawson beat Enoka Smiler, and in the Bowl Consolation final, Rex Hayes beat Pete Hamilton.

To be played at the Upper Hutt Pétanque Club, Maidstone Park, Upper Hutt on Saturday 4 October. Start time is 9:00 for 9:30 am.
